Answer President Obama’s Call for Shorter Lines at the Polling Place
If you watched President Obama’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday night, you heard his call for the need to reform our election processes to lessen wait times at polling places. Below is an excerpt of his speech:
We must all do our part to make sure our God-given rights are protected here at home. That includes our most fundamental right as citizens: the right to vote. When any Americans – no matter where they live or what their party – are denied that right simply because they can’t wait for five, six, seven hours just to cast their ballot, we are betraying our ideals … We can fix this, and we will. The American people demand it. And so does our democracy.

State of The Union Address, February 12, 2013
When I served as Election Director in the City of St Louis, we made it a priority to make it as easy as possible for citizens to vote. But I became frustrated with the outdated technology available to election offices especially when it came to reducing wait times. This experience led me to develop an innovative e-poll book called Poll Pad which I’ve been sharing with election officials across the country. In less than a year, we have expanded to help election authorities in over 25 counties in my home state of Missouri and are branching out into a number of other states.
Since launching Poll Pad, we have been delighted to hear from county clerks and elections officials about how our product is drastically reducing voter wait times. In fact, Poll Pad can easily process a voter within 20 seconds and voters can go to any poll worker, not just an “A-K” line, further increasing poll worker efficiency. Because Poll Pad is so easy to use, morning setup takes only seconds and training can be done effectively in minutes.
The Poll Pad is also the only electronic poll book that functions seamlessly on a single piece of hardware. It can scan all bar codes, including driver licenses to instantly look up a voter with its built in camera, eliminating the need for any dated external hardware. Best of all, voter history is easily updated after the election. No more scanning, temp workers and overtime – just upload your accurate voter history with ease.
